This morning I flew from EDI back to JFK and have quite a layover before I arrive back in Denver tonight. I am so grateful I had this experience and I hope I have the chance to come back to Scotland in the future!
Bergen, Norway proved to be our rainiest and coldest port, but we didn't let the rain get in the way of our plans! Karen and I headed on foot towards the funicular that would take us to the top of Mount Foyen. While the views were clouded the top of this mountain had a lot to explore. There were trails, forests with large trees and a troll forest to explore! After lots of exploring (a little more than we bargained for as we missed the turn off for the lake!) Karen took the funicular down to town and I hiked to the city center. I ended up in the middle of an absolute downpour and was quite drenched by the time I made it back to port! After a much needed hot shower and dinner Karen and I eat up at Syd Norman's, the pub on board that features live music. The group performing was absolutely fantastic and did an 80s prom theme night! It was a great way to wrap up our day in Bergen. We were both glad to have a sea day after Bergen to give us time to rest and recover. Since we are he...
Today we arrived at our first port of call, Isafjordur, Iceland. The port was stunning and surrounded by mountains that still had a dusting of snow on top. After breakfast I took a walk around the promenade deck to take in the views. Next up was our local village tour and then the Dynjandi waterfall. We walked through the village and the tour had different places set up to try different fish dishes. The first was a smoked haddock that is smoked in the little house pictured in the background in the picture. Next there was a fried fish cake of haddock and cod and finally there was a warm dish of haddock and mashed potato served with rye bread and butter. I thought all of them were very tasty! We drove about an hour, part of the way was through a long windy tunnel, to reach Dynjandi waterfall. The views were stunning and it is hard to put into words the sheer beauty...
I think Flam has been my favorite port so far! Flam is a small town of only 300 people surrounded by mountains and waterfalls. The port was very quiet and marked with walking trails, there was a distinct outdoorsy vibe! While Karen explored the town and the trail around the Kulturpark, I hiked to Brekkefossen, a beautiful waterfall about a mile and a half outside of town. The hike was very scenic along farm roads and the last bit at the trail head was about 500 stone steps to the waterfall lookout. It was well worth the effort as I was misted with waterfall spray at the top! After rejoining with Karen in town, we did some souvenir shopping and then went back aboard the ship for lunch as the rain really started to come down! Looking forward to Bergen next, our last port in Norway!
