Tanzania Day 7

Morning Safari

We were up bright and early again this morning for breakfast and safari in the Serengeti! We were lucky to see two male lions right outside the door of our vehicle! There is something about looking a lion in the eye that is simultaneously incredible and terrifying. In the distance we were able to see lionesses with cubs on a rock ledge. It reminded me of Pride Rock from the lion king. We also saw some giraffes, hippos, and ostriches. We learned that the male ostriches are black and the females are gray. The male that we saw was a breeding male because his neck was bright pink. Our guide also shared that since the males are black they guard the nest at night, while the females guard during the day.

On our drive we mentioned to our guide that David has been really into spotting and identifying birds on this trip (he even has his own beginner guide for birds in East Africa). The guide went out of his way to spot some really interesting birds, including a bee eater, which was one of David's top birds he wanted to see! We also got to see a secretary bird, several raptors, shrikes and many others! It was impressive how the guide could spot some of these very small birds while driving.
Back at the hotel we had lunch and the boys got some pool time! The pool overlooks a watering hole where you can see all kinds of animals. Today we spotted clipspringers, an elephant, and mangooses. I have a feeling these two boys will not want to leave this place!

Afternoon Safari

Our last game drive of the day featured a Pearl Spotted Owlette, the African buffalo, the Magpie Shrike, Fisher's Lovebird, a Pale Chanting Goshawk, and ended with four lionesses! What a perfect way to end our time here in the Serengeti. Tomorrow will be a big travel day to Amboseli National Park in Kenya!
