Day 6: Flam

Image
I think Flam has been my favorite port so far! Flam is a small town of only 300 people surrounded by mountains and waterfalls. The port was very quiet and marked with walking trails, there was a distinct outdoorsy vibe! While Karen explored the town and the trail around the Kulturpark, I hiked to Brekkefossen, a beautiful waterfall about a mile and a half outside of town. The hike was very scenic along farm roads and the last bit at the trail head was about 500 stone steps to the waterfall lookout. It was well worth the effort as I was misted with waterfall spray at the top!  After rejoining with Karen in town, we did some souvenir shopping and then went back aboard the ship for lunch as the rain really started to come down! Looking forward to Bergen next, our last port in Norway!

Days 4 and 5: At Sea and Alesund

Day 4 was a quiet and restful day at sea. Karen and I explored all of the on board activities, from learning the Cha-cha-cha (we are both wildly uncoordinated) to trivia to live games like Deal or No Deal and the Price is Right. We had a great time meeting new friends, enjoying the food, and resting up before our next day in port! On day 5 we arrived in Alesund Norway to gray clouds and rainy weather. Despite the gloomy greeting, I was very excited to take in the fjords and for our fjord cruise excursion! We were very lucky that the rained stopped and were able to get out on deck for pictures. The mountains and waterfalls were beautiful! I learned from our guide that bears were hunted to extinction here, but there are still wolves and the most common fish is cod! We will leave the port later this evening and head to Flam, Norway!
